Editing Analysis Assignment: Boyhood

After watching Boyhood this weekend I felt that there was one scene in particular in which its editing really allowed the audience to feel what Mason was going through when he left home for the first time to start his freshman year at college. The scene starts out with a very open shot of a very long, quite road, with miles and miles of desert and mountains. I feel that his alone speaks to the storyline of the scene because its represents the road of the unknown in which Mason is about to experience. The possible opportunities are undetermined and are endless for him and I think this shot alone shows how scary and unsettling it is to start a new chapter of your life on your own for the first time ever. The scene continues and focuses in on Mason’s truck, all his belongings in the trunk, and then continues to go in and out of Mason inside of the truck and then his surroundings. Throughout his trip, you see how empty his surroundings are, how he’s alone, and how big the world really is when you leave home and are really alone for the first time in your life, with no parents or familiar faces. For the most part the frames are pretty wide in this scene and I think that was intended to make the audience feel as if they were moving on with Mason and to help evoke the same feelings in which he too may be feeling at this particular time in his life.

Soundwalk Assignment

For this assignment I decided to sit right outside my apartment building, which is located in the heart of Midtown East on 58th Street between 2nd and 3rd avenue. I felt that this location was a perfect location to listen to the classic sounds of New York City, as its surrounded by a number of restaurants, stores, office buildings, residential buildings, and more. As I sat outside my building on Wednesday afternoon, I was presented with a number of city sounds. The major “keynotes” I heard were people walking by talking to others or people talking on their cell phones. Some people who walked by were listening to music and if you listened carefully enough you could hear the music playing out of peoples headphones. There was construction happening on the block and the sounds you could hear were drills going into the ground, machine engines roaring and beeping, as well as, the construction workers conversing with one another on what to do. Some would even yell down to their co-workers who were located on the other end of the block. Due to the construction, the block consisted of many metal plates on the ground and when cars drive over them you can hear an almost banging sound every time one crossed over. Some “sound signals” I heard that definitely caught my attention and made me look in the direction of where the noise was coming from were cars that would beep at one another while waiting to drive down the block. I was also able to hear many different types of music such as rap, and Spanish music blaring from cars whose windows were down. I also heard the occasional emergency signal from fire trucks, ambulances, and cop cars, which is a staple sound when it comes to popular noises within the city. I feel that for the most part the sounds in which I heard throughout my hour long “soundwalk” were pretty typical for the sounds of the city and were pretty accurate as to what is to be expected on a typical day in NYC.

Artist Statment

I’ve never thought about myself as the creative type or as much of an artist at all, but as I’ve immersed myself more and more into the media world the last year or so I have found that I am truly passionate about a number of different things. From a young age I always loved fashion and celebrity life. Whether I was reading all the latest magazines, gossip blogs, or watching reality television I always envisioned myself working in the media field, whether working for a magazine, fashion company, or television network. Although I have always envisioned having a career in one of these three areas, I am excited to be given the opportunity to explore the world of filmmaking, as movies and television are such a major part of my every day life. Through filmmaking I hope to show people ways in which given situations and circumstances directly affect human nature and behavior. Throughout my life there have been bumps in the road that not only have affected me but also have helped to shape me into the person I am today. As a result, I hope to pass on some of the many lessons I have learned to others through the art of filmmaking.
